    Senior Graduation Message

    Seniors,
As you know, each year while families and the community sit in the stands waiting for graduation to begin, VHS loops pre-recorded thank you messages from graduates.  The time is now upon us and we need your messages!

Please see Mr. Sparks THIS FRIDAY, May 13th!  He will work with seniors to record their messages to families.  If you come to school daily, he will record you during class.  If you are an off-site/virtual student, please e-mail him at ssparks@aadusd.k12.ca.us, and work with him to select a time that works.

Thank you, and have a great day!
    Mike Murphy
    Principal

    State Testing: April 26-29

    Dear Parent/Guardian:

There are many ways to measure your child’s learning. Your child’s teacher uses classroom work, observations, and end-of-year statewide test results to get a complete picture of your child’s learning.

One primary tool that school districts use to measure children’s progress each year is the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). This statewide test helps us determine whether students have acquired skills in Math, English Language Arts, and Science for specific grade levels.

The CAASPP is important because it provides information about the effectiveness of our public education system and programs. The more information we have about our system, the more proactive measures we can take to ensure it’s benefiting all families and equipping all students to succeed in reaching the standards that will close opportunity gaps. We appreciate your support in ensuring we gather this information through CAASPP testing.

Your child will take the following CAASPP tests, depending on their grade level or instructional program:

*Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for English Language Arts and Math (required in grade 11)

*California Science Test (CAST) (required in grades 11 and 12 at VHS for 2022)
Please note that, to my knowledge, CDE is requiring 12th graders to take the CAST as a condition of graduation.

The summative assessments are taken on-line. This year, the testing will take place during in-person instruction.  Additionally, attachments that provide detailed information from the California Department of Education are included for your convenience.

    FAFSA Reminder: January 29, 2022

    Seniors and Parents:

We are excited to learn that many of our seniors have been accepted to four year colleges and universities.

I would just like to remind everyone how incredibly important it is to complete the FAFSA.  This is the first step for colleges and trade schools to determine financial aid awards for grants, scholarships, and loans.  State Aid (CalGrant, other CA awards) cannot be awarded without completing the FAFSA first!

YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE FINANCIAL AID WITHOUT COMPLETING THE FAFSA!!!!!

If you have not done so already, PLEASE COMPLETE YOUR FAFSA application at:
    https://studentaid.gov/fsa-id/sign-in/landing?continueTo=fafsa

If you would like me to work with you and your student, please make an appointment with me ASAP.  I can be reached at by email or cell at 760.221.7343.

These are the items you will need to complete a FAFSA on your own:
    https://studentaid.gov/articles/things-you-need-for-fafsa/

If you work with me, I only need you to bring a copy of your 2020 federal taxes and your student will need to know their social security number.

Have a nice rest of the weekend,
    Mike Murphy, Ed.D.
    Principal

This is summary of the letter that went out regarding updated guidelines.

#1 If your student contracts COVID OUTSIDE of school, they will automatically need to quarantine at home for 5 days minimum.

#2 If your student is exposed to COVID at school (in the classroom, etc), they will be required to a) Test on Day One of Notified Exposure; b) Test again on Day Five of Exposure; and c) Be required to wear a mask BOTH indoors and outdoors for 10 days from the initial exposure; and remain at home and avoid ALL OTHER activities outside of school (going to store, movie theater, fast food, etc).  According to LACDPH, students who abide by these protocols (exposure to COVID at school).

#3 Anyone who tests positive for COVID may have a shortened isolation period.  See item #1 above.

#4 Families will continue to receive e-mails from VHS informing them that their child(ren) may have been exposed to COVID at school; however, this DOES NOT necessarily require full quarantine.  Rather, it is intended to inform families of exposure.

***Students, please remember that this is a new semester!  You are starting out fresh with your classes.  If you had great grades last semester, awesome--keep it up!  If you didn't earn what you are capable of, this is a new semester, and with this opportunity, you can earn the marks you are seeking.  Treat semester 2 just like 2022.  It's a new year as well as a new semester.  Use this time to shine!

****Next week I will be meeting with students by grade level to outline academic and behavioral expectations.  I will outline school-wide goals, how each of us will demonstrate our commitment to these goals as students, faculty, staff, and administration, and I will be outlining our framework for how students will be rewarded through incentives.  A lot has been planned, and I anticipate students will be excited to learn how they will be rewarded for their merit and commitment.

Have a great rest of the week.

Good evening VHS parents and community, here are your weekly announcements.  First, as another reminder, this Friday marks the end of the quarter.  Please make sure you are checking your child's AERIES account, and please remember just because they may be showing that they are present, does not mean that they are completing work.  Second, this Thursday is the Great Shakeout put on by the state.  Please keep an eye out for an email with more details including resources to discuss as a family.  Third, VHS will be a voting center from October 30th through November 3rd.  Lastly, and certainly not least, please check out this MTV Link to last weeks MTV broadcast by our Broadcast Journalism class.  That is all for this week, continue to be safe and healthy!

    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

     10/5/20

Good evening VHS parents and community members, this is your weekly update.  First and foremost, I wanted to apologize again for the last minute cancellation of picture day last week.  While it was not what any of us intended to happen, it was likely a good thing it occurred.  On Thursday, in an meeting update between LACOE and LA Department of Public Health with county school districts, clarification and direction was given that picture days cannot occur at schools.  As a result, we will be postponing picture day until that direction has been changed.  As a reminder to all, the end of the quarter is next Friday, students should be working with their teachers on turning in assignments.  As mentioned before, grades count, and can have major consequences if credits are not earned during the semester.  Also, please remember, simply showing up to a class does not mean your students are doing their work.  Please, help us be proactive and check your child's AERIES account and grades regularly.  That is all for this week!  Have a great evening and continue to be safe and healthy.

    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

     9/30/20

Good morning all, I apologize for the inconvenience. This morning our photography vendor did not show up; when we called the company they indicated that they did not calendar our date today even though we were confirmed early in September with our area representative. Therefore, we will not be doing pictures today. We will be working to try and schedule another date. Students please continue to check Google Classroom for assignments.

    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

     9/28/2020

    Hello VHS Families

First, as a reminder this Wednesday will be picture day between 8:00 and 12:00 based on your last name.  Please review the schedule sent in previous messages.  A reminder email will be sent tomorrow evening as well.  Please remember that students will not engage in Zoom meetings on Wednesday due to picture day, however, students may still have assigned independent work or assignments to complete Wednesday.  They should still check their Google Classroom for all classes.  Second, we are half way through the first quarter.  Please ensure you are checking on your child's progress, the quarter will end in mid-October.  This will affect student eligibility for athletics/activities if they are below a 2.0 GPA.  Last, I would like to encourage everybody to check out our MTV broadcast for last week at the following link: MTV Broadcast #4
That is all for this week, please stay safe and healthy!
